Jonson won the inaugural Portugal Invitational at The Els Club in Vilamoura (Portugal), defeating Stuart Cink in the two-round playoff.
In the final round, Jonson started from three strokes behind the leader: Rory Sabatini, Stewart Cink and Padraig Harrington, who were at 13-under par and were tied for the lead. Jonson then took the lead with birdies on the 7th and 9th holes, before finishing 5-under on the back nine to overtake the field.
Stuart Cink made bogey on the other hand, after which he moved 3-under par, but fell behind at the crucial moment, when Jonson sank a birdie putt on the final hole.
Padraig Harrington, who started the final round with a strong grip, but then missed his putt with three holes to play. Jonson then finished the tournament with two more birdies.
The tournament concluded on the 18th hole, where Ernie Els had the advantage. BBC said that the course was designed for the PGA Tour Champions, and that the course was also set up in a way that made it easier for players to score. Forbes also noted that the 7,000-yard par 4, which Jonson played in the final round, featured 478-yard par 4, where he hit 0.312 strokes over par.
Among the other results in the final round via BBC: Miguel Angel Jimenez won at 12-under, Justin Leonard — at 10-under, Darren Clarke — at 9-under, and Els and David Duval — both at par. It was also noted that Jamie Donaldson closed the round at 7-under.
