Joe Marler is set to become the first celebrity Gladiator on the popular BBC Gladiators reboot. In a statement, BBC said the 36-year-old former sportsman will take part in the series from the start of the fourth season, which is expected to air in 2027.

The BBC said that the new season of Gladiators will feature Sheffield’s Sheffield Gladiator. The network said Marler will deliver a series of special appearances, which, according to BBC, will include “power, personality and plenty of surprises”.

Marler has already teased his appearance on the show in a video posted on Instagram, which BBC describes as being filmed for the Gladiators makeover. The former England rugby player also said in the video: “Mauler will see you now,”.

The format of Gladiators involves contestants competing against a group of elite sportsmen in a series of staged challenges. BBC says the show has previously been a hit on ITV in the 1990s, and the format was adapted by Sky in 2008; a new version started on BBC One in 2024.

According to BBC, in the fourth season Marler will face the other Gladiators, including Nitro, Viper, Diamond and Sabre. The Independent reports that there will also be other Gladiators such as Apollo, Comet, Diamond, Nitro and Dynamite.

BBC also says that Marler will be brave in his first season of Celebrity Traitors. The Independent also reports that the former rugby player’s participation in the show is expected to be revealed in a new project, and that the final episode will feature a new voiceover; the network also says that it will be revealed in an episode of Celebrity Traitors. The Independent also notes that Marler will be the first to be seen in the series in 2024, after which it will be revealed in full.

BBC has also confirmed that other celebrity contestants will include Gladiators participants such as AJ Odudu, comedian Sara Pascoe, podcast host Chris Ramsey and George Clarke.
