Zverev and Medvedev fall at the Masters 1000 in Canada

At the ATP 1000 Canadian Open in Montreal, the two top seeds were eliminated in straight sets by Alexander Zverev and Danil Medvedev. Zverev, who was seeded third, lost to Tallon Griekspoor, and Medvedev, who was seeded fourth, was beaten by Botik van de Zandschulp.

The match between Griekspoor and Zverev ended 6-7(3) 6-2 6-4. The tie-breaker was decided in the first set, when Zverev lost the first set in a tiebreak to Griekspoor. Meanwhile, Griekspoor went on to win the next two sets. In the second set, Griekspoor took advantage of Zverev's mistakes and won the set 6-2. In the third set, Griekspoor again held his serve and broke once to win 6-4.

Medvedev then went on to face defeat at the hands of van de Zandschulp 6-3 7-6(5). The match was decided in the first set, when van de Zandschulp broke Medvedev's serve and took control of the momentum. In the second set, Medvedev had a chance to turn the match around, but van de Zandschulp held on and won the tiebreak to seal the victory.

It is also worth noting that the streak of top-10 players in the tournament ended, as the top-10 seed was eliminated in the last 16. Meanwhile, the 6th seed Fabio Kobloli lost to the 10th seed Andrey Rublev, while the 5th seed Félix Oje-Alyassime was eliminated by a player from outside the top-10.

According to L'Équipe, Zverev lost all of his matches in the tournament in straight sets. The publication also notes that the match featured 2 breaks in total and lasted 33 minutes, ending 6-7(3) 6-2 6-4, while another statistic showed that the result was decided by the opponent's serve breaks.

According to L'Équipe, Félix Oje-Alyassime, who was in the tournament, had a streak of 1/16 finals in the last 16 matches. The publication also notes that in the last 16 there will be no top-5 player, which means that for the first time since 1991, there will be no top-5 player in the Masters 1000 last 16 in Rome.
