New research suggests the Hranice Abyss could be deeper than expected

The Hranice Abyss lies near the town of Hranice and, according to previous estimates, is about one kilometre deep. However, the new findings, published in the journal Journal of Geophysical Research: Earth Surface, suggest a different depth—at least 404 metres.

The study’s authors, including Krzysztof Starnawski, say the new results show that the abyss is at least 404 metres deep. The new findings, based on geophysical data, indicate that the depth could be much greater.

Geologists from the Geofyzikální ústav Akademie věd conducted a geophysical survey using various methods, including gravity measurements, electrical resistivity tomography, and seismic measurements for atmospheric modelling. According to the authors, the results may indicate a depth of around a kilometre, rather than the previously assumed figure.

The study also focuses on the internal structure of the Hranice Abyss near Přerov. The researchers used data from the Speleologická záchranná služba, in which the team’s dive was carried out at a depth of 186 metres. According to the new analysis, the abyss may be 185–186 metres deep.

However, the material also notes that, according to Speleologická záchranná služba, the dive at a depth of 186 metres was carried out in a group at a time when the signal was lost, and the team did not return. The authors also add that, in 2012, Krzysztof Starnawski reached a depth of 225 metres, and in 2014 he reached a depth of 384 metres. In 2016, he reached a depth of 404 metres. The material further states that, on 1 September 2022, he reached a depth of 450 metres.
