- OpenAI plans to supply Stargate UK with electricity by 2026 through a regulatory loophole.
- The Guardian reports that, under the FoI, OpenAI and Nscale were unable to provide details about which regulator in North Tyneside, where Nvidia is set to supply power by 2026, would be responsible for the project.
- According to the material, the reason for the delays lies in the fact that the potential of the electricity supply is not yet known, while the Nscale investment plan for Stargate UK is still ongoing.
OpenAI plans to proceed with Stargate UK, a partnership for the construction of data centers in the UK. By 2026, the company’s forecast is to supply electricity to the data centers through electricity generation.
According to The Guardian, OpenAI, unlike other companies, does not provide details about the location of Stargate UK. The material also says that, according to a £20bn figure for planned investments, which is supposed to be made by the British government, the project could be implemented.
Stargate UK was announced in 2025 with construction scheduled to begin in Donalld and continue to London. According to the plan, the project will be carried out by OpenAI, Nvidia, and the British power supplier Nscale, and the plan is to expand the infrastructure to meet the needs of the UK’s major energy demand.
The Guardian also reports that the country’s AI growth zone, which is described as a small part of Stargate UK, has a planned investment of £30bn, with £10bn of the so-called committed Blackstone and a further £20bn potential, according to Spotlight on Corruption, a division of The Guardian. The material says that the sum of £20bn is not yet included in the details, while the material says that the sum is needed for the construction of the data center, which is expected to have an output of 1.1GW.
Parallely, The Next Web reports that, beyond 2026, the company’s planned supercomputer Nscale in Loughton, Essex, will be built to support future operations. The material also notes that the company is planning to invest in Nscale’s data center power supply, but that the contract is still being negotiated, and the company says that it will not be able to provide details until the project is completed.
The Next Web also states that, according to the company’s plan, the Nscale investment for Stargate UK will be €695 million for the construction of 66,000 Nvidia Rubin GPUs at Microsoft’s data center in Sines. It also claims that BT and Nvidia’s project with Nscale will provide BT with 14 megawatts of “sovereign AI capacity” at three new BT data centers.
The Guardian’s report, citing a statement from the company, says that the company is working on a plan to invest in AI data centers, and that the AI growth zones in the region are expected to reach a total of 1.1GW. The material also notes that the same taskforce, led by technology secretary Kim McGuinness, is pushing the plan for investment in the region, while the North East AI growth zone is expected to exceed 1.1GW by 2028, with 400MW planned by 2028.
